Editor's take
Still one of the best-value full-frame bodies years after launch, the a7 III pairs a back-illuminated 24.2MP sensor with 693-point autofocus and 15 stops of dynamic range, bundled with the 28-70mm kit lens.
The a7 III earned its reputation as a value benchmark for a reason: 693 phase-detection points covering 93% of the frame, 10fps burst with AE/AF tracking, and 15 stops of dynamic range were class-leading at launch and remain genuinely competitive today. In-body 5-axis stabilization and a weather-sealed body round out a well-rounded, mature platform.
Its menu system and single UHS-II card slot (of two) show its age against newer bodies, but image quality and autofocus performance hold up remarkably well for the price.
Pros
- 693-point autofocus covering 93% of the frame
- 15 stops of dynamic range, ISO 50-204800
- 5-axis in-body stabilization in a weather-sealed body
Cons
- Older menu system than Sony's newer bodies
- Only one of two card slots is UHS-II
- 4K video is line-skipped rather than fully oversampled
Ideal for: Shooters who want proven full-frame image quality and autofocus at a lower price than newer flagships.
Reviews
Nearly a thousand reviews with a strong average; buyers consistently cite it as excellent value for full-frame image quality.
