Editor's take
The second-generation standard zoom for Sony full-frame, roughly 200g lighter than its predecessor while improving sharpness across the frame.
This is the lens most working Sony shooters reach for by default — weddings, events, portraits, product work. Version II shaves real weight off without giving up anything optically; if anything, corner sharpness improved.
It leans on the camera body's in-body stabilization rather than carrying its own, which is fine on modern Sony bodies but worth knowing if you're pairing it with an older one.
Pros
- Noticeably lighter than gen 1
- Extremely sharp corner to corner
- Fast, near-silent autofocus
Cons
- Expensive
- No stabilization (relies on body IBIS)
Ideal for: Sony full-frame shooters who need one lens to cover most situations at a professional level.
Reviews
Professionals consistently call it their most-used lens; the price is the only recurring objection.
