Editor's take
Canon's budget nifty-fifty for RF mount — the lens most new full-frame shooters buy first for portraits and low light.
At under $200 this is the easiest lens on this list to recommend as a first prime: it's small, it's cheap, and wide open at f/1.8 it already resolves more detail than most kit zooms manage at any aperture.
Build quality is where the savings show — the mount is plastic and the STM focus motor is audible in quiet video takes — but for stills and the price, it over-delivers.
Pros
- Very affordable
- Sharp wide open by f/2.8
- Tiny and lightweight
Cons
- Plastic mount
- Audible focus motor in video
- No weather sealing
Ideal for: New full-frame shooters who want a fast, cheap prime for portraits and low light.
