Editor's take
A studio-standard wired reference headphone used widely for audio monitoring and mixing, with a 40mm driver and foldable closed-ear design, at $113 with 28,370 reviews at 4.7 stars — the highest rating of any headphone in this comparison.
The Sony MDR7506 is a long-running professional studio headphone, wired (no battery, no Bluetooth) and aimed at audio monitoring, mixing and DJ use rather than everyday listening. It uses 40mm neodymium drivers, a 9.8-foot non-detachable cord with a gold-plated plug and a 1/4-inch adapter included, and folds flat into the included soft case for storage or travel.
Amazon's spec table lists the frequency response as '10 Hz to 20,000 Hz', matching the marketing bullets exactly; the same table separately shows two mislabeled fields — 'Frequency Response: 20 KHz' and 'Sensitivity: 10 hertz' — which look like the frequency range's two numbers got split into the wrong fields rather than being independent specs, so we relied on the clean, consistent 'Frequency Range' field and the bullets instead. Noise handling is passive only (a sealed closed-ear design), not active noise cancellation.
With 28,370 reviews at 4.7 stars, this is the highest-rated headphone in this entire comparison, reflecting its decades-long reputation as an industry-standard reference headphone. At $113 with no listed discount, it doesn't compete on price the way the budget wireless options do, but it's a distinct pick for anyone doing serious audio work.
Pros
- 28,370 reviews at 4.7 stars — the highest rating of any headphone in this comparison
- Industry-standard reference headphone for professional audio monitoring and mixing
- Folds flat for storage/travel and includes a soft carrying case
- 40mm neodymium drivers with a wide, accurate frequency range
Cons
- Wired only — no Bluetooth, no battery, tethered listening only
- No active noise cancellation, only passive isolation from the closed-ear seal
- No microphone included
- Amazon's spec table has two mislabeled fields ('Frequency Response: 20 KHz' and 'Sensitivity: 10 hertz') that appear to be a data-entry split of the correct 10Hz-20kHz range rather than separate real specs
Ideal for: Audio professionals, musicians and DJs who want an industry-standard wired reference headphone for monitoring and mixing.
