Editor's take

A lightweight full-frame mirrorless built around Canon's fast Dual Pixel AF II, aimed at hybrid shooters who want pro-grade stills and video in a small body.

The EOS R8 borrows most of the autofocus brain from Canon's flagship bodies and drops it into a chassis that barely weighs more than an APS-C camera. Eye and subject tracking lock on fast and rarely let go, which matters more day-to-day than most spec-sheet numbers.

Rolling shutter on the electronic shutter is noticeable in fast pans, and there's no in-body stabilization, so a stabilized lens or gimbal helps for handheld video. For stills shooters who travel light, though, it's hard to beat the image quality per gram.

Pros

  • Excellent low-light autofocus
  • Very compact for full-frame
  • Great 4K60 video oversampled

Cons

  • No in-body stabilization
  • Single SD card slot
  • Battery life is modest

Ideal for: Hybrid shooters who want full-frame image quality without the bulk of a flagship body.

Reviews

Reviewers consistently praise the autofocus and portability; the lack of IBIS is the most common complaint.
